13 Practical Ways to Reduce Microplastics in Your Kitchen

Microplastics are tiny plastic fragments that are shed throughout a plastic object’s lifespan. These ubiquitous particles can enter food and drinks through plastic packaging and containers, nonstick cookware, plastic kitchenware, and everyday kitchen habits. Some experts estimate that we consume 5 grams of plastic every week, which is about the size of a credit card.

The long-term health effects of microplastic exposure are not fully known. Plastic is laden with numerous additives, many of which are highly hazardous to human health and the environment, and the majority are unregulated.

Creating a truly microplastic-free kitchen is nearly impossible in modern life, but you can meaningfully reduce plastic exposure with small, practical swaps and habits. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s reducing unnecessary exposure where practical, especially in situations involving heat, friction, and food contact.

Microplastics in the kitchen are released at higher rates due to heat, mechanical forces like cutting or scraping, and contact with acidic foods like citrus, tomatoes, and vinegar.

1. Ditch your plastic cutting board

Take a close look at the surface of a plastic cutting board and you’ll likely find scratches, grooves, and worn areas created by repeated slicing and chopping. These spots can release tiny plastic particles into food (as well as harbor bacteria), which is supported by research. A 2023 study determined that plastic cutting boards are a “substantial source of microplastics in human food.”

Choose a cutting board made from durable natural materials such as wood or bamboo, or non-plastic materials like stainless steel or titanium. While the upfront cost is often higher, quality cutting boards can last for years, look better, and avoid the constant wear associated with plastic surfaces.

2. Say no to Teflon-coated cookware

Teflon is the most well-known brand name for the non-stick coating on pans. Its nonstick properties come from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a type of PFAS (‘forever chemical’). These substances are highly persistent in the environment, leading to contamination of air, water, and soil that can last for thousands of years. In humans, PFAS have been linked to a wide variety of serious health concerns.

2022 study done in Australia showed that a single scratch in a pan’s Teflon coating can potentially release 9,100 micro- or nanoplastic PFAS-containing particles; a broken coating could result in as many as 2.3 million tiny particles being released during meal preparation.

Better alternatives

Teflon-free pans offer a safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional nonstick pans with a PTFE coating. With options such as ceramic coatings and naturally seasoned materials like cast iron and carbon steel, you can achieve excellent nonstick performance without compromising safety or sustainability.

3. Toss plastic cooking utensils

Plastic utensils can degrade with cooking heat and friction, potentially releasing microplastics—especially lower-quality nylon or heat-sensitive plastics. Kitchen utensils made from black plastic have been especially scrutinized due to a widely publicized October 2024 study which determined that black plastic often contains large amounts of toxic flame retardants, which can leach into food.

Better alternatives

Replace plastic cooking utensils with safer alternatives such as food-grade silicone, stainless steel, titanium, or sustainably sourced bamboo and wood—the safest cooking utensils for health. These materials are also very durable and long-lasting.

4. Don’t microwave plastic containers

It can be extremely tempting to take your restaurant leftovers out of the fridge and straight into the microwave without dirtying an extra dish, but you should think twice about this shortcut. Since plastic sheds more readily with heat exposure, using plastic containers to heat food in the microwave can be a substantial source of microplastics in food. Research suggests that microwaving plastic containers may release millions of microplastic and billions of nanoplastic particles into your food. This applies to containers labeled as “microwave-safe.”

Better alternatives

Be sure to always heat food in glass or ceramic. In addition, refrain from adding hot foods and beverages to plastic containers.

5. Handwash plastic kitchenware

Dishwashers combine heat, water, detergents, and abrasion — conditions that can accelerate plastic breakdown. These conditions may facilitate the release of millions of microplastics into wastewater each year, including from those plastic dishes labeled “dishwasher-safe.”

6. Check your sponge

Conventional kitchen sponges and scrubbers are often made from plastic-based materials that slowly wear down during use. A 2026 study found that household kitchen sponges release measurable amounts of microplastics into wastewater through normal scrubbing and abrasion, with higher-plastic-content sponges shedding the most. More natural, lower-plastic alternatives released substantially less.

Better alternatives

Look for sponges made from 100% cellulose, a compostable material derived from wood pulp. For scrubbing power, use natural materials such as walnut or coconut coir, or try a recyclable copper scrubber for tougher scrubbing needs.

Avoid any sponges labeled as “antimicrobial,” “antibacterial,” or “anti-odor”. These don’t necessarily mean they are safer or healthier, and companies often disclose very little about the chemicals used to create those properties

7. Choose loose leaf tea over bagged tea

Tea bags may be a quick and convenient way to prepare a cozy, hot mug of your favorite tea, but many conventional tea bags are made from polypropylene, nylon, or PET plastic. Studies have found that millions, or even billions, of microplastic particles may be released when tea bags are steeped in hot water.

Unfortunately, even tea bags made from paper may not be safer for your health. Some may contain a plastic-based adhesive to seal the bag or a carcinogenic compound called epichlorohydrin to prevent paper from breaking down when wet.

Better alternatives

The simplest and best solution to avoid harmful chemicals is to buy loose-leaf tea rather than tea bags.

If you must stick with tea bags, make sure to choose brands that use unbleached natural materials, are sealed using mechanical folding or non-toxic adhesives, and are epichlorohydrin-free. Stash Tea is one such brand.

Don’t forget to brew your teas in a glass, metal, or ceramic container.

8. Reduce beverages bottled in plastic

Bottled beverages are one of the most widely studied sources of microplastic contamination. Studies have detected microplastics in bottled water, beer, soda, tea, juice, and energy drinks, with contamination influenced by factors such as packaging materials, bottle wear, storage time, and sunlight exposure. Reusable plastic bottles may release even more microplastics over time due to repeated use and mechanical wear, such as squeezing.

The hard truth is that completely plastic-free beverage containers are few and far between. In addition to plastic bottles and jugs, aluminum can linings, plastic-lined lids and caps, paper carton liners, painted caps, filtration systems, and processing equipment can all contribute to microplastic contamination. However, direct-contact plastic packaging—especially reusable, heated, or worn plastic containers—still appears to be the primary source of exposure in many studies.

Better alternatives

The best beverage container options to reduce microplastics are those made of stainless steel (rare) or glass with a plastic-free, unpainted lid.

The next best choices are aluminum cans, frozen juice concentrate cans, and gable-top or aseptic/Tetrapak cartons. Although these contain thin plastic linings, they may release fewer microplastics than fully plastic containers.

And of course, avoid drinking from plastic water bottles, especially at home. It’s one of the simplest ways to reduce microplastic exposure and unnecessary waste. Get yourself a sturdy stainless steel water bottle, filled with filtered water to drink from while at home and on the go (see next).

9. Install a good water filter

According to a study conducted by Orb Media, microplastics are present in 94% of tap water in the United States—the highest contamination rate in the world. It is important to note, however, that the lack of standardization of microplastic analysis in water leads to variable results. Still, the amount of microplastics in tap water is generally much less than in bottled water.

While no filtration system can guarantee the complete removal of all micro- and nanoplastics, some technologies appear to be much more effective than others. Reverse osmosis (RO) systems currently have the strongest evidence for reducing both micro- and nanoplastics, along with a wide range of contaminants, including PFAS and other chemicals.

Solid block activated carbon (SBAC) filters combined with ion exchange (IX) technology also appear to perform well and are commonly found in high-quality under-sink filtration systems.

When shopping for a water filter, look for independent NSF/ANSI certifications rather than relying solely on marketing claims.

If an undersink water filtration system is not within your budget, do not despair. Research has suggested that any filters meeting NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 standards may also effectively reduce larger microplastic particles (>1 µm), particularly those with SBAC filtration. This can include refrigerator water filters and countertop filtration. LifeStraw is a reputable company offering a quality water filter pitcher and dispenser.

Finally, there may be a very low-cost alternative: a 2024 study conducted in China found that boiling hard water, the existing minerals precipitate, trapping microplastics, and allowing them to be captured by a simple filter, such as a coffee filter. Through this method, about 90% of microplastic contamination was removed from the water. While promising, this method’s effectiveness depends largely on water hardness, and more studies are needed.

10. Choose foods that are packaged plastic-free

Plastic food packaging is possibly the most significant source of microplastics in food and beverages. These particles may originate from the degradation of plastic packaging, contamination from food processing equipment, or exposure to environmental pollutants. Mechanical stress, such as ripping, tearing, unwrapping, or repeated opening and re-opening of plastic packaging, likely results in microplastic shedding.

Additionally, chemical reactions occur between plastic packaging and food, which can compromise food safety and/or quality. Additives to plastic packaging, such as phthalates, can migrate into food. Vinyl chloride or dioxin, highly toxic substances, may find their way from PVC packaging into your next meal or snack.

Better alternatives

Realistically, unless you live a fully self-sustainable life, eliminating plastic food packaging is not possible. However, you can significantly reduce food-related microplastic exposure (in addition to plastic waste) with mindful purchases.

  • Seek out products packaged in non-plastic alternatives. Foods commonly found in plastic bottles and jars are likely to have alternatives packaged in glass or aluminum. This includes foods like dried herbs, cooking oils, condiments, and peanut butter. Other foods, such as pasta, may be packaged in paperboard boxes rather than plastic. Foods that come in non-plastic packaging sometimes tend to contain higher-quality ingredients, too.
  • Buy loose produce rather than bagged or precut options. Purchasing whole fruits and vegetables and chopping or otherwise preparing them yourself, rather than a product like a prepackaged salad kit, will both be healthier and more cost-effective.
  • The convenience of individually-packaged snacks like chips, pretzels, cheese, and Lunchable-type snacks or meals is very appealing—especially when you have kids. Set aside some prep time each week to slice cheese or veggie sticks for quick snacks and lunches (again, a much more budget-friendly alternative). Even for foods like potato chips, buying larger family-size packages and portioning into servings rather than individual ones decreases plastic exposure and packaging waste.
  • Consider buying in bulk. Some smaller stores may specialize in bulk, and many grocery chains have a bulk food section. WinCo has a large selection of foods, coffee, candy, and pet food.
  • If a food only comes in plastic packaging, transferring it to a non-plastic container at home can still help reduce additional plastic contact during storage.

11. Limit intake of processed foods

In addition to plastic packaging, processed goods may harbor more microplastics than other foods due to prolonged exposure during manufacturing processes. Research suggests that exposure to machinery with plastic components (such as cutting boards, filters, or conveyor belts), contaminated water sources, airborne plastic particles, and plastic storage containers contributes to microplastic contamination of processed foods.

Kids are at higher risk because, on average, up to two-thirds of their diet consists of ultra-processed foods.

As a side note, another important reason to eat less of these foods is their higher carbon footprint, not only due to manufacturing but also the prevalence of palm oil. Because of its ubiquity in processed foods, the average person consumes an estimated eight kilograms of palm oil each year. Better alternatives

The best solution is to prepare homemade meals using fresh ingredients rather than processed or pre-prepared foods. This can be difficult in our busy daily lives, but meal planning and weekend prep go a long way, even if it’s only for one extra home-cooked meal per week. Learning how to prepare some of the foods you eat the most, such as bread or granola, is also a meaningful effort, giving you control over the ingredients.

12. Replace plastic food storage containers

By now, you know that plastic particles and associated chemicals can migrate into your food from plastic packaging. So why continue that migration that continues with time once you get food home from the store, or with a home-cooked meal? While

Store foods—especially hot ones—in glass, ceramic, stainless steel, or silicone. If this isn’t possible, allow food to cool before transferring to plastic food storage containers.

13. Eliminate use of Ziploc bags and cling wrap

Like other plastic food packaging, plastic cling wrap and bags are subject to frequent mechanical forces, such as stretching or reopening, that can result in microplastic shedding. Additionally, these single-use plastics generate unnecessary waste—there are many more efficient plastic-free options.

Better alternatives

Purchase silicone storage bags, such as Stashers, my personal favorite. These durable bags are even dishwasher-safe and can be used for sous vide. They make a great reusable substitute for sandwiches, cutting down on single-use plastic waste in the process.

Instead of plastic wrap, you can go cheap and simply use a plate to cover bowls. Zefiro Reusable Silicone Lids are thin, stretchy covers that come in multiple sizes to tightly cover a variety of bowls. Final thoughts on reducing microplastics in your kitchen

Making small behavior changes and swapping plastic kitchenware for non-toxic alternatives is an important way to reduce exposure to microplastics and the harmful chemicals they contain. Many of these are simple, while others—especially food packaging—can pose significant challenges. While perfection isn’t realistic, avoiding exposing plasticware to heat, acidic foods, and repeated mechanical use (like cutting on or squeezing) is a great place to start.

    A question regarding plastic containers. I tend to accumulate a lot of them because I love yogurt. Do you have any re-use suggestions for the large yogurt containers or should they just be trashed? They are not recyclable in my community.

As for large yogurt containers, I don’t really have any reuse ideas other than storing food or other items. I remember my grandma used to send food home with us in sour cream containers, and my mom sometimes does the same.
