Getting rid of an old mattress can feel like a major hassle—they’re bulky, awkward, and too big for most vehicles. But if you live in Salt Lake City (or Salt Lake County), you’ve got good options. Local services and recycling programs make it possible to conveniently dispose of or recycle your mattress in an eco-friendly way.
Mattress donation in Salt Lake City
Even if you’ve got a mattress that’s relatively new or still in great condition, mattresses are tricky to donate as very few charities or thrift stores will accept them for health and safety reasons. If no family or friends are interested, I suggest posting on the Salt Lake County Buy Nothing group on Facebook–it is not uncommon to see mattress requests there. The only thrift store I have found that may be willing to take gently used mattresses is The Other Side Thrift Boutique.
Salt Lake City mattress disposal
Mattresses occupy a significant amount of space in landfills, and they certainly don’t belong on the side of the road. Additionally, 90-95% of the components of a mattress can be recycled, so please don’t throw your mattress away!
Mattress recycling in SLC
Mattress recycling in Salt Lake City is performed by Spring Back Utah, the only mattress recycling operation in the region. There are several ways to get your old mattress to them.
- If you are buying a new mattress, many retailers will haul away the old one for recycling.
- Work with Spring Back directly.
- How it works: Schedule a pickup online. It costs $60 for them to come collect your mattress from your home, and $20 for each additional mattress, box spring, or mattress frame. If you need assistance getting the mattress outside, they will do that for an extra $30. It is very easy to schedule a pickup on their website; I scheduled mine, and they came the next day.
- You have the option to drop the mattress off yourself for a reduced fee of $20.
- For $15, you can drop your old mattress off at the Salt Lake Valley Landfill, where Spring Back regularly picks up from.
- The cheapest method is to schedule your annual Salt Lake City Call2Haul pickup. This is a free annual bulk waste collection service for city residents. Schedule your pickup online, and they will haul your old mattresses and box springs to Spring Back for recycling. Pickup also includes numerous other items, such as furniture, appliances, and electronic devices, so take the opportunity to declutter; check their site for specific materials they will collect, which are all donated or recycled if possible.
Where to buy an eco-friendly mattress in SLC
Before shopping for a new mattress, make sure to read about what to look for in a non-toxic, eco-friendly mattress and browse the non-toxic mattress brands that I have researched. Many traditional mattresses are laden with a variety of chemicals, including VOCs, and many are composed of synthetic materials.
Unfortunately, there aren’t many options to try out a sustainable mattress in person in SLC; before buying online.
Your best bet is to head down to Bradley’s Sleep / Salt Lake Mattress located at 2255 South 300 W. They carry Savvy Rest organic mattresses, as well as other brands that use organic or natural materials in their products.
Crate & Barrel carries Naturepedic mattresses; check to see if the model you are interested in is on display in the Fashion Place location.
